Developer Update #7: Star Lite Filtered Through the Block Guy

Posted on August 22, 2025 by DrPyspy

BEHOLD! Yet another development log entry for YOU! Yes, YOU! Progress continues to move on this wondrous machination of joy and whimsy. In this devlog, we'll be looking at some character redesign shenanigans and take a trip to Star Lite City!

Pool Jam

A new Tomb Fetus music preview! Pools of Acquisition is the track for Pool Day. Heavenly plucks and taps stand side-by-side with synth-y bits and such! One second you're in a world of poolishness, and next second you're dancing like a pool. Very pool!#TombFetus #gamedev #modding #music #doom

This track was a tough one to crack at first. The original inspiration was a handful of different tracker songs, the Amazing Island OST (particularly the Hall of Life and monster creation tracks), and the general clean and futuristic Wii-era music vibe. Half the track ended up being a tribute to that bouncy bubbly frutiger aero kinda deal, while the other half took more after tracker dance tracks with a teensy bit of Better Off Alone in there.

Journeying into the world of music making has been tricky, but fun! In a way, a map's track is like the map itself expressing its personality beyond what you can see from its surface, kinda like how a character's voice speaks to their personality, so being able to give maps their 'voice' is very satisfying! Speaking of characters...

I'm Not Even Myself Anymore!

The Tomblets have undergone many design revamps since the earliest days of Tomb Fetus, though most of the major overhauls have been completed many moons ago. However, those with keen eyes may have noticed a new character design from the occasional glimpse in recent screenshots...

He's quite the stud!

Say hello once again to Billerman! His old digitally block built body has been shed in favor of a fresh articulated form! Many of the earliest Tomb Fetus characters began as silly jokes and simple creatures, most of which are a far cry from their modern incarnations. Billerman stood as a bastion of this early era, with his only changes being an skeleton and a very slight model revamp when team modes were added. Time had finally run out for the blocky bastard though, as though he stood proudly, he stood among his peers... and he stuck out like a sore stud. And so, his time had come.

From pen to paper to plastic...

This specific concept originated from planned concepts for alternate character designs, in case some of Tomb Fetus' more on-the-nose parodies ended up flying too close to the sun and a revamp was required for one reason or another. Billerman's backup design ended up being very charming, and I became so fond of him that I ended up modelling and animating him! At that point, it was already decided; Billerman was reborn like a fleshy plastic fetus crawling out of a cocoon!

It's time to block 'n load! (rest in peace)

He looks fresh and fabulous, but there will still be echoes of his original inspiration going forward; he's still a masterful builder who heads a block-based construction company... with a few lawsuits dangling over his head. Funnily enough, this revamp is genuinely unrelated to any sort of events regarding hypothetical wealthy corporations with a blatant disregard for child safety that may be dealing with lawsuits as we speak. How coincidental!

The Stars in the Sky

Metropolis has nothing on this!

Welcome to Star Lite City! This is one of the major cities established by the Morphian people. During a pivotal moment in the city's history, the council unanimously agreed to conserve sacred land by expanding vertically instead of horizontally, resulting in a towering cityscape that's constantly being iterated upon! Snake-like highways slither between the skyscrapers with an odd sense of beauty and grace, like some sort of concrete caterpillar!

Lose your way and fall again!

Compared to cities of lesser height like New Cicero and Skulville, there's a lot of places to fall down here, and I mean A LOT. The trip down is fairly short thanks to powers beyond elaboration, but you'll still lose everything you were carrying, as if you were shot in the ol' noodle. That's just the way it is with your run-of-the-mill ominous chasm, so watch your step!

As it happens, it happens here!

One of the more prominent buildings in this area is the Ygg Channel broadcast building, where the news-like team casts broadly across the world! The Tomblets aren't allowed beyond the lobby, but they are allowed to watch the live feed from the studio. Be overcome with awe at the newscaster's enviable stamina!

Note from the Tomb Fetus Federation: the views expressed on the Ygg Channel and its programs do not necessarily reflect the views of the Tomb Fetus Federation or its sponsors, but we're stuck involved in a contract an agreement that forces encourages us to shill promote Ygg Channel programming in perpetuity. We usually do it late at night when nobody is watching.

It's construction time! Again!

Right next-door is a building undergoing construction and renovation! What is its purpose? That's non-essential information. What is essential information is that you can find a Chaotic Jewel in here! It's an important Ekedonian cultural artifact tied to life and prosperity... as well as flying. This is an odd place for it, though; they're usually kept safe and hidden from the wider public. Why is it here? It's probably for a good reason and not because of anything nefarious, illegal, or immoral in nature.

Thus ends another devlog! I'm probably going to do some more character insight stuff in the future, whether it's delving into their design evolution or their actual personalities. Maps are almost fully artpassed (with the exception of the stray dev texture here and there) and the powerups are nearly all finished. Massive internal playtesting should start kicking off again soon! Server-hosting stuff is still something I need to get sorted before release, but we'll see how that turns out in the near future!
